An All-English Final for UEFA Champions League
Since the turn of the century, English Clubs have won the premier European Football Competition, UEFA Champions League only four times. The past decade had particularly been dominated by Spanish Football Clubs, with Six out of ten competitions won by Spanish clubs. English Clubs managed to win only two events during the time period, with Chelsea winning in 2011-12 and Liverpool clinching the title in 2018-19. While the English Clubs had won only twice throughout the decade, German Champion Bayern Munich alone managed to win two events out of the past ten. Similarly, Spanish Football giant Real Madrid won four times during the period. This shows how miserably English Football had failed to retain its dominance in the biggest event of European football club.
However, 2021 brought a great news for Football Fans, lovers and supporters in England, two English Clubs made it to the finals to make it an all-English UEFA Champions League final. Manchester City, the latest premier league champion, extended their dominance by thrashing the French football spearhead, Paris Saint Germans by 2-0 and 2-1 in both legs of the UEFA champions league semi-final.
On the other hand, Chelsea managed to win against Real Madrid by 2-0 in their home-leg of the competition, after their away leg of the semi-final ended in a draw at 1-1.
The final between Chelsea and Manchester City is scheduled on Saturday, May 29th, 2021 at Ataturk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul.
On the premier league table, Manchester City have confirmed their championship by managing 80 points out of 35 games. The other finalists of the UEFA Champions League, Chelsea are comfortably placed at fourth spot, and look all set to make it to the next years UEFA Champions league event.
While Manchester City have emerged as a team with immense talent, smart management and perfect execution over the past few years, it is worth mentioning that the English giant has also set new champions league records. Their victory against PSG in the second leg of the semi-final was their 11th of the event, which is a new champion’s league record. Similarly, it was their seventh consecutive UEFA Champions league win, which is the joint longest victory streak in the history of the competition.
If Manchester City go one ahead in the upcoming final and manage to win the glorious trophy of the UEFA Champions league, both these records will be improved automatically.
After successfully winning their third premier league title in four years, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City look all set to establish themselves as the Champions of the Europe. Considering that City enjoyed a miraculously dominant performance this season, it would be unfair to rule Chelsea out. And perhaps no one will.
Interestingly, the last time the two finalists faced each other, the London-based Chelsea FC emerged victorious, when Marcos Alonso’s goal in the extra-time gave them the win against the premier league champions by 2-1 in a closely contested match.
Considering that the two sides will be playing at their full-intensity in the much awaited and highly anticipated game of the season, Fans can definitely expect a treat from their favourite sides. However, with the pandemic restrictions in place, it is possible that fans may not get to watch the all-important final.
With only a couple of weeks remaining till the final, the venue for the final has still not been finalized. Originally, the final was scheduled to take place at Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul. However, Turkey is currently on the red-list of the travel restrictions, which means that players and fans returning to United Kingdom from Turkey will have to observe a mandatory 10-day quarantine at any of the assigned government hotels. This will make the logistical arrangements a challenge and would deprive the fans of the opportunity to witness a memorable game of football.
UEFA is considering options to move the final, so that all such issues could be avoided. Wembley Stadium London looks like a feasible option since it will be in the best interest of the fans. However, the host of the last year’s Champions league Final, Lisbon (Portugal) is also being considered to arrange the final. UEFA management has been in talks with the government agencies and a final decision on the venue for the upcoming UEFA final is expected in the coming days.
Latest Updates suggest that UEFA has decided in favour of Estádio do Dragão, the Drago Stadium of FC Porto, to stage the final of UEFA Champions League. Yet no official announcement has been made but reports stage that the Portuguese stadium will host almost 10,000 football fans for the high-voltage clash between two titans of English Football.
Let’s see where the final is staged. We at 1st Place 4 Trophies wish all the very best to the soccer fans not just in England but all around the World. Hopefully, the fans will get to witness an exciting, enthralling and entertaining final. May the best team win and bring the trophy to England!
