How to stay motivated all the time, particularly on the playing field?

A day in the life of a sportsman is never an easy one. The toil that you go through is what shapes the sporting giant inside of you. You have to schedule, train regularly, follow a specific set of habits, keep up with the commitments on and off the field, and continue your struggle towards excellence.

While the whole proposition has been quite concisely described in a couple of lines, the real-world version of it is pretty exhaustive. It is such a demanding race with cut-throat competition that finding yourself down and out at the end of the day is a pretty natural phenomenon. Your body pains, the stress levels continue to blow your mind, your joints tend to crumble, and your nerves continue to receive the hammering. But what matters is the courage to continue with your constant, consistent, and persistent efforts. After all, that is the only thing that is going to take you to glory.

The courage to initiate and persist with a process is called motivation. It is the drive that helps you in getting out of your bed on a freezing cold Sunday morning to train. Motivation often plays a decisive role in the lives of sportsmen. It gives them focus and helps them in retaining their intensity levels.

Heroes of History, who were high on motivation

Motivation was the only driving force behind Michael Jordan's rise to the top of basketball. Motivation was a tremendous driving force behind the personal change of Mike Tyson outside the ring. Keeping his aggression within the boxing arena and for sport only, motivation and the desire to change lead to Mike Tyson being less aggressive to others outside the ring. Motivation gave Pakistan's Champions Trophy-winning captain the energy to keep up with his challenging routine during his teenage years.

Sachin Tendulkar continued batting across two games for ten successive days only because he had this flame of motivation burning deep inside him to play the game at the highest level.

While this emotion kept these legends going, it has been observed that youngsters these days find it challenging to retain their focus on their performances and often end up quitting their dreams. 1st Place 4 Trophies understands the importance of motivation in life and sports. Hence, we are bringing you some inspirational tips to inspire and motivate you.

Focus and SMART Goals:

Often the youngsters give up because they tend to lose their focus. Often their goals are not well-defined, and they end up losing track of their progress. The result is a total wastage of effort, time, talent, and energy.

As it goes in the corporate world, setting up SMART goals can help. SMART goals are the ones that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-based. Even if you feel down in the dumps right now and unhappy with your current performances, these goals can help you get back to your best by fighting your way through these challenges.

So, the first thing that you need to do is sit down, grab a writing pad, take a pen and write down the goals for yourself. Define them properly and prepare a plan to achieve them. It has been psychologically proven that writing stuff down often adds to the clarity and reduces a person's anxiety levels since it helps in self-reflection.

Visualise the Process:

Visualise yourself as doing great things on the field. Do not visualise yourself as the best player on the planet. But visualise yourself as a player who is working his heart out to become the best player on the planet. Visualising the process will help you in getting to the top of the world.

Once you visualise yourself doing all those drills, training activities, and gym sessions, your mind will automatically feel more motivated to do stuff on the field.

3-Ds Rule:

While the term 3D may seem like a scientific and technological term, the three-Ds principle can revolutionise the whole life of a sportsperson.

The first D stands for direction. It would help if you first considered the different directions you can go in your sport.

You have three choices:

Stop participating completely.

Continue at your current level.

Strive to be the best athlete you can be.

You know what's the best one for you. So, strive and be the best.

The second D represents decision. While decision-making is a much-needed trait to be a good leader, a sportsperson is always acting in the capacity of a leader. Either he is leading his squad or his own self. So, make decisions while taking into consideration all the aspects of your game.

Third-D signifies the dedication. Once you have chosen the direction, set the goals, and taken a decision, it's the dedication that helps you in standing by it. Only by being completely dedicated to your direction and decision will you ensure that you have prime motivation.

Tough Competitors and Committed Partners (Rule for life):

Competitors and Training Partners can also help. While having a tough bloke as a rival can help you in improving, having a nice and disciplined lad as your training partner can help you in sticking to your routine. As they call it, it's always great to hunt in pairs.

A great partner will not just stand by your side through thick and thin but will also keep you going during the toughest of days. Hence, find the right person as your partner and start your effort towards competing against your most formidable rival. It will just add to your hunger to improve.

Question yourself daily:

Just ask yourself daily, "Are you doing enough to be the best? And is it all you can do?" Regardless of the answers, these questions will stir you up to excel to the next level.

Always remember to fight and fight against the odds because that's what Champions do.
