National Year of Reading 2026

Posted by Tammy Jenkins on 23rd Jan 2026

According to studies there has been a profound, 40% decline in people reading for pleasure. We have shorter attention spans and would rather scroll on our mobile phones or stream the latest shows on television.

This rapid decline is having an enormous impact on education. Many parents do not realise that children can become engrossed in books rather than electronic devices, but it starts with leading by example.

When did you last visit a library?

The National Year of Reading aims to reverse the decline, for children in particular and ensure that reading remains a permanent fixture in our daily lives.
